First 200: From Master Mariner to Captain of Industry and inspiring, influential leader
Captain Pradeep Singh is among the first 200 graduates supported by the Middle East Centre on his learning journey through the Manchester Global Part-time MBA. Over his distinguished career, he has successfully brought his maritime experience onshore and expanded his business interests globally. He has diversified into real estate and information technology, created renowned brands like Aethon & Karma, well known in their respective spheres. Recognised for his contributions, he has earned accolades in both the maritime and realty sectors. Most recently, he was honoured as one of Arabian Business' 100 Most Inspiring Leaders and Gulf Business' Most Influential Indians in the region for 2024.
Captain Pradeep currently leads the Aethon Group, which he founded; chairs Karma Developers; and is Chairman of the Board of the Centurion Group of Companies, with international business interests. A certified Master Mariner, he holds numerous academic and professional qualifications and is currently following the prestigious Owner President Management Program with Harvard Business School.
Why pursue an MBA at this stage of your career?
Despite having significant industry and executive experience, I felt the need for a structured, holistic understanding of global business strategies. The rapidly evolving business landscape meant I had to sharpen my strategic thinking, leadership, and innovation capabilities. I had the practical knowledge and experience but the MBA allowed me to delve deeper into the theoretical aspects of business strategy and management. My goal was to enhance my ability to make data-driven decisions, develop more effective leadership strategies, and better understand financial models. I also wanted to expand my professional network on a global scale, learning from peers across various industries.

Was transitioning back to studying difficult?
Returning to the classroom after a professional break was challenging, especially balancing work and study. However, the support from my cohort, faculty, and flexible learning structure eased the transition. The collaborative environment encouraged knowledge-sharing and I quickly adapted to the academic demands of the programme.
Was flexible learning part of the appeal?
Absolutely. As someone managing multiple business interests, the flexibility of the programme was crucial. The combination of online learning and in-person workshops allowed me to pursue my education without compromising my professional responsibilities. It was the perfect fit for my schedule.
Did faculty-led workshops provide valuable face-to-face contact?
The faculty-led workshops were integral to the experience. Was cohort diversity important to you?
Very much so. The diversity of the cohort was one of the most rewarding aspects. The diversity of thought enriched the learning experience and helped me apply new strategies in my businesses.

The MBA played a crucial role in my career development. It gave me a deeper understanding of business strategies, a global network, and the confidence to pursue bigger ventures. It helped me grow as a leader, innovate effectively, and position my businesses for long-term success. Did the MBA help you see your current roles differently?
Absolutely. The programme offered fresh perspectives on leadership and management. It helped me refine my decision-making process, approach to innovation, and understanding of global market dynamics. I also became more focused on sustainable growth and the long-term vision of my businesses.
Are you an active Manchester alumnus?
Yes, I am in touch with a lot of alumni and regularly follow all Social Media handles and updates and also attend the socials, as and when possible.
Are you a supporter of lifelong learning?
Absolutely. After the MBA, I continued to pursue many learning and development opportunities, including LLM, MSc (Finance), CPA, CMA, and PhD. Lifelong learning is essential for staying relevant in today's fast-paced world. I am keen to explore further development opportunities with Manchester, whether through executive education programmes or industry collaborations.
