Research

Research starts with curiosity. At The University of Manchester - Dubai, we support research that brings people together, asks meaningful questions, and works towards real solutions.

Research with global excellence and regional relevance

The University of Manchester is internationally recognised for research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and measurable societal impact. Through its Research Beacons and REF framework, the University advances scholarship addressing global challenges across Sustainable Futures, Digital Futures, Health Innovation, and advanced materials and systems research.

Research activity at the Dubai branch aligns with these institutional priorities while responding to regional contexts and opportunities. We collaborate across multiple Schools and research centres within the University, contributing regionally grounded empirical work and applied research engagement.

Dubai serves as a platform for research translation, complementing Manchester’s broader ecosystem through industry-embedded inquiry and knowledge exchange.

Strategic research themes

Research in Dubai contributes to University-wide priorities across:

  • AI and Digital Transformation – organisational adaptation, governance, and leadership in data-driven and technology-enabled environments
  • Sustainability and Sustainable Futures – organisational responses to climate, operational, and systemic challenges
  • Circular Economy and ESG Integration – embedding sustainability principles within complex operational systems
  • Leadership, Culture and Organisational Transformation – the institutional and behavioural enablers of innovation and systemic change

Applied research and industry engagement

A central pillar of research in Dubai is structured collaboration with industry across the UAE and GCC.

Over the past year, applied research streams have been initiated within live operational environments, embedding empirical inquiry into organisational practice.

In parallel, discussions are underway with major organisations across healthcare, heavy industry, and infrastructure sectors, reflecting growing regional demand for applied, evidence-based research partnerships.

Our model moves beyond consultancy toward co-created research agendas, where academic rigour and organisational relevance are integrated from the outset. This approach reflects the University’s commitment to research that delivers public value, informs practice, and generates measurable impact.

Research-led education and student inquiry

Research and postgraduate education are closely integrated.

A pilot pathway now supports selected student projects toward professional dissemination and conference submission, strengthening research culture and capability within the Dubai campus.

MBA Live Business Projects and Business Inquiry modules operate as structured consultancy engagements, enabling students to investigate real organisational challenges and produce evidence-based outputs.

This integration of scholarship and education contributes to a developing research environment aligned with REF principles.

Research environment and knowledge exchange

Building a sustainable and visible research environment is a strategic priority.

In 2026, the Dubai campus convened the inaugural Industry–Academia Impact Forum, bringing together senior leaders from industry, research, and policy with a clear objective: to demonstrate how research collaborations can generate measurable value for both industry and the University.

The Forum was designed not simply as a platform for discussion, but as a mechanism to:

  • Identify structured pathways for applied research collaboration
  • Translate academic insight into operational and strategic impact
  • Align industry challenges with research expertise across the University
  • Strengthen reciprocal value creation between academia and organisations
